Colorado Equipment Update

What Colorado’s 2026 furnace rules mean for homeowners

Colorado HB23-1161 established lower NOx-emission limits for covered new gas furnaces and water heaters beginning January 1, 2026. It does not require you to replace existing working equipment.

What changed

New covered equipment must meet the updated emissions limits

The law affects the manufacture, distribution, sale and lease of covered new equipment, subject to stated exceptions and compliance provisions.

Your existing system can remain in service. You do not have to replace a working furnace or water heater only because the rule took effect.
New gas equipment is still available.Replacement choices must meet applicable Colorado requirements.
Planning can protect your options. An evaluation before an emergency failure gives you time to compare repair, compliant gas, heat-pump and dual-fuel choices.
